This issue contains the entire Cold Chimney Swallows pattern.
Starting with simple exercises, building to the final assignment (pictured), students perfect convex and concave curves, sharp points, V’s, stems using bias, circles, and reverse applique. This class can be conducted over one day (students take the final assignment home to complete), or two days (includes additional lectures about broderie perse and Baltimore Album Quilts, and gives more guided time towards the final piece).
In this one hour lecture, Kathryn shares her research gathered for Aves about blocks named for birds. There are hundreds of them; more than could possibly be included in the Aves quilt. Illustrated using antique quilts and patterns, it is a fascinating history of quilt blocks, and a cornucopia of block designs for future projects.
In this one or two day class, students learn all the tips and tricks for accurate sewing, rotary cutting and quick machine piecing, so that their points meet and their blocks come out the correct size! A selection of 3½” X 3½” blocks are made, enough for a cushion or bag.
Almost named I’m not scared of Y-Seams or Diamonds Anymore, in this one day class, students work with diamonds and set in seams, perfecting intermediate piecing skills, to make a block large enough for a cushion or bag. An optional foundation-pieced border is supplied to make a stunning circular block.

A note from Carol at Quiltmania:
“If you were in need of new ideas for a project, look no further … Our latest individual pattern, 1920’s Tile, by Kathryn Kerr, has arrived with enough time for you to make one of your own to showcase during the Holiday festivities!
Inspired by an antique tile, Kathryn has designed a sumptuous blue and white quilt, the pattern in a palette of blues, similar to the Dutch Delft. It combines elaborate applique with some classics, such as the Ohio Star, Northumberland Star and Old Snowflake Blocks.
If blue isn’t one of your go-to colors, this quilt would be just as fabulous designed in a multi-colored palette, or in a variety of reds, ochres and greys…
This is an exceptionally versatile project with unlimited possibilities! So what are you waiting for, you have your hands full with this one!”

While I was making 1920’s Tile, I bought a packet of about a dozen different applique needles and tested them all. My criteria included: sharpness and ability to pierce the fabric cleanly, bendability, breakability, whether the eye frayed my thread, and usability.
My favourite was the Clover Black-Gold Applique Needles, Size 12. I am not affiliated in any way with Clover; these needles were just the best! I prefer the smallest needles, size 12, but I have listed other larger sizes too, and this assorted pack so you can figure out which ones you like, since we all have personal preference … and varying degrees of arthritis.
I later found out that Yoko Saito, one of my heroes, also favours these needles, so I’m in good company!
