Mitring Corners – Single Mitred Corner

Preparation

1. Press back the corner of one of the fabrics that will be in the mitre. This is sufficient to mark the position of the seam; however, the fold line may be overdrawn with a pencil on the wrong side, if preferred.

2. Mark the wrong side of the centre block, ¼” from the corner.

Sewing

1. Sew to within ¼” of the end of the seam (as you marked), and reinforce by oversewing or using your machine’s lock stitch. The other end of the seam does not need to be reinforced.

MC first strip

2. Apply the second strip, stopping ¼” from the end of the seam. As well as your marking on the back of the centre fabric, you will feel the machine bump up against the thicker fabric of the existing seam, and this point will also coincide with the fold of the strip you are sewing.

The other end of the seam does not need to be reinforced.

See how the seams are able to move freely at the corners:

3. Now fold the strip back into position and press. It is usual to press the seams towards the strips.

4. Pin the underneath part of the fold.

Once pinned, carefully fold the unit in half, exposing the excess fabric underneath:

5. Sew the seam of the mitre to within ¼” of the end of the seam at the corner, and reinforce by oversewing or using your machine’s lock stitch. The other end of the seam does not need to be reinforced.
